To legions of fans around the world, the Indianapolis 500 is racing's greatest spectacle. And to anybody with something to sell, it is a staggeringly powerful marketing tool. That fact has not gone unnoticed by automobile manufacturers who pay dearly for the honor of providing the race's pace car.

Car & Driver's January 1998 issue illustrated the top ten "Garage Mahals" in the U.S. Andy Roderick's palatial garage, devoted to Corvettes of mostly the C5 variety, was grand enough, in the style of India's Taj Mahal, to make this vaulted list. But that was in Athalia, Ohio, and a previous millennium.

There are tuners and then there are tweakers. Sriyantha Weerasuria of Elite Motorsports in Austin, Texas, considers himself the latter. He's actually more. MTI in Houston did build the engine and modified the drivetrain on his 9-second hardtop. But Sriyantha, who friends call S.W., did the rest.

The Car Connection has their review of the 2002 Corvette: "For the second time in its history, the 'Vette will cross that magic horsepower barrier, with Z06 editions pumping out a tire-shredding 405 hp. (You're forgiven if you can't recall the 1990s ZR-1 Vettes that also made 405 hp.) That's 20 more than the top-line 'Vette made last year, and 55 more than the base coupe and convertible."
